4-H FOCUS ON THE FUTURE: "THE LANYARD"
As we continue to make progress on the 4-H Focus on the Future priorities, it also makes sense to stop and acknowledge all we are doing for young people in Kansas 4-H. As we rush from one summer activity to another, take a moment to
listen to the poet, Billy Collins, read the funny, ironic poem "The Lanyard". The speaker
remembers a small gift he made for his mother in summer camp. Through a series
of clever comparisons, the lanyard seems a puny gift in comparison to the care
and compassion he received from his mother, yet his gift was indeed a heartfelt
gesture. For me, it commemorates not
only a mother’s love but applies to all parents, volunteers and youth development
professionals that are deeply committed to helping kids become happy, healthy,
productive adults. (“The
Lanyard”) Stone

4-H ROCKETS AND FIRE BANS ACROSS KANSAS INFORMATION
The extreme
weather conditions are changing almost daily across Kansas due to the severe
drought and high temperatures and winds.
The Kansas 4-H SpaceTech Action Team is aware that in some Kansas counties
there are currently bans (or may be bans in the near future) on devices that
create open flames. These bans include the launching of model rockets. We, the Kansas 4-H SpaceTech Action Team
consider the safety of 4-H’ers, our clubs, and our communities/counties
paramount. We have decided again in 2012 to suspend the Kansas State Fair
SpaceTech Rocketry Rule requiring that the rocket be launched prior to display
at the Kansas State Fair for the 2012 State Fair because of the fire dangers in
some Kansas counties. This decision applies to all rockets entered for the Kansas State Fair in 2012. We will be suspending the following rules at
the Kansas State Fair: (Rule 6a and Rule
7a)
Exhibit Rules
for all rocketry categories:[...]
- 6. One or more photographs of the rocket at the
launch site are required: a. Photographs showing the rocket at the moment
of ignition are preferred.[...]
- 7. To exhibit in this division: a. The rocket must
have been flown. [...]
What this
means is judges will not deduct a ribbon placing because the rocket has not
been launched or because there are not pictures of the rocket at a launch
site. All rules other than 6a and 7a
will still be enforced. On the
"rocket information forms" that are attached to the manila envelopes,
the launch information may be left blank or completed indicating that the
rocket was not launched. All other information on the form should be completed. Furthermore we are encouraging counties
affected by such burn bans or other similar safety concerns to waive or suspend
any such rules requiring the launch of rockets prior to exhibiting them. Those
counties not affected by such bans are encouraged to use discretion on
suspending county fair rules regarding the launching of rockets prior to
display.
If your county
is affected by a burn ban please publish this information in your county
newsletters and or any other means to let 4-H’ers know that they do not need to
launch their rockets and create a fire risk.
Should you
have questions regarding the suspension of this rule for the safety of 4-H’ers
and their communities please contact Deryl Waldren at 785-462-6281 or dwaldren@ksu.edu. We appreciate your attention to this matter,
and your help in spreading the word. Waldren

4-H SPECIALIST ENHANCING YOUTH PROGRAMS IN JAPAN
Deryl E. Waldren, K-State
Research and Extension Specialist, 4-H Youth Development located in the
Northwest Area Office in Colby is heading to Japan in mid-July. Waldren is the current chair of the States’
4-H International Exchange Program (S4-H) Board.
He and S4-H President Yoko
Kawaguchi of Seattle, WA, will be networking with the three Japanese exchange
partner organizations: Labo, LEX and
Utrek while in Japan. S4-H provides high
quality international cultural immersion and exchange programs for youths aged
12-18, both to-and-from the USA. All programs enhance world understanding and
global citizenship.
The US-Japanese 4-H Exchange
Program is renowned for teaching language skills and for providing exchange
members a host family experience. This
year marks the 40th anniversary of the US-Japanese Exchange 4-H Program. Since this 4-H exchange started in 1972 more
than 48,000 families in the USA have hosted youths from foreign countries and
more than 7,500 American youths have spent a month living as exchange students
in foreign countries. Last year more
than 740 families hosted foreign youths and 66 American teens traveled abroad. Waldren
NEW FCS JUDGING CONTEST REASONS FORMAT
Article Content:
4-Hers who have participated in the state 4-H Family and Consumer Sciences Judging Contest have sometimes been confused by the reasons worksheet and the need to transfer this information to the Scantron scoring card. We know that many youth are familiar with an electronic scoring card (such as Scantron). To make the process simpler, the 4-H Family and Consumer Sciences Action Team has modified the reasons work sheet. We will no longer use the familiar table format. Instead, each reasons statement will be asked as a true/false statement for each choice. While it may look like the same question is asked four times, each time it refers to a different choice. 4-Hers can mark the worksheet, then transfer their answers to the Scantron card, or they may mark their answer directly on the Scantron card. Samples of the new reasons class format can be found on the Family and Consumer Sciences page of the 4-H website at http://www.kansas4-h.org/~/doc6954.ashx.
Remember also that at the state contest, we do not use individual judging cards. The cards that are needed are copied onto one piece of paper with the name of the classes clearly indicated. This helps prevent dropped/lost cards and makes scoring much simpler.
We hope this gives you plenty of time to work with coaches so judging team members are familiar with the format prior to the state contest. We believe this change will improve 4-H members' experiences with Family Consumer Sciences Judging Contests.

SALUTE TO EXCELLENCE 2013
4-H is a community of young people across Kansas who are
learning leadership, citizenship, and life skills. Volunteers are the heartbeat
of the 4-H program serving as mentors, teachers and friends. The National
Salute to Excellence Volunteer Recognition Award recognizes 4-H volunteers who
demonstrate exceptional service to 4-H. The Kansas Association 4-H Volunteers
has adopted the Salute to Excellence award to recognize and promote Kansas 4-H
volunteers who have excelled in their roles locally and continue with selecting
Kansas’ top volunteers for National competition. The Kansas Association of Volunteers believes
establishing the Salute to Excellence Award will provide two options for the
Kansas 4-H Program: 1) recognition of 4-H Volunteers for their outstanding
contributions to 4-H youth and 2) enhances the mission and awareness of the
Kansas Association of 4-H Volunteers.
Each extension unit will
select their representative and submit their nominees electronically to the
Department of 4-H Youth Development by October
15. Those individuals then will have an opportunity to submit application
for the Kansas Outstanding Lifetime Volunteer and Volunteer of the Year.
Kansas honorees then become Kansas’ nominees for the national award. For
specific selection criteria check out Salute to Excellence 2013 Volunteer
Recognition Awards Nomination Form at Kansas 4-H.org under “What’s Hot." Van Horn
