2014 KANSAS 4-H AND FFA WHEAT VARIETY PLOT ENROLLMENT OPEN
It is time to remind members to re-enroll or ask new members to enroll for the 2014 Kansas 4-H and FFA Wheat Variety Plot program. The program begins fall of 2013 and goes through September 2014. The enrollment form and program details are currently available. Visit: http://www.kansas4-h.org/p.aspx?tabid=297. Members are asked to contact their local Extension Office by July 10 for information with enrollments due to the Northwest Area Extension Office by July 22, 2013. Cost for 2013-14 will again be $30.00 to receive the five varieties of wheat. This fee is now needed to contribute to the cost of the wheat varieties. It is very important that we know the number of participants early, so we can have enough seed and metal signs available for Extension agents and leaders to pick up at the Kansas State Fair. New participants will receive a free large plot sign, and five free individual variety signs. These will be distributed on Friday, September 6th at the 2013 Kansas State Fair. Don’t forget to pull your wheat samples for the Kansas State 4-H Wheat Show on Thursday, August 1st at Great Bend, and also for wheat samples at your county fair, that may be eligible for the Kansas State Fair 4-H Crops Division. This year's participants who are getting ready to harvest their plots should be planning their county fair display for possible qualifying for the Kansas State Fair entry in the Showcase Building. 2014 KANSAS SALUTE TO EXCELLENCE
4-H is a community of young people across Kansas who are learning
leadership, citizenship, and life skills. Volunteers are the heartbeat of the
4-H program serving as mentors, teachers and friends. The National Salute to Excellence
Volunteer Recognition Award recognizes 4-H volunteers who demonstrate
exceptional service to 4-H. The Kansas Association 4-H Volunteers has adopted
the Salute to Excellence award to recognize and promote Kansas 4-H volunteers
who have excelled in their roles locally and continue with selecting Kansas’
top volunteers for National competition. The Kansas Association of
Volunteers believes establishing the Salute to Excellence Award will provide
two options for the Kansas 4-H Program: 1) recognition of 4-H Volunteers for
their outstanding contributions to 4-H youth and 2) enhance the mission and
awareness of the Kansas Association of 4-H Volunteers.
Each extension unit will select their representative and submit their
nominees electronically to Pam Van Horn by October 15. Those
individuals then will have an opportunity to submit application for the Kansas
Outstanding Lifetime Volunteer and Volunteer
of the Year. Kansas honorees then become Kansas’ nominees for the
national award. For specific selection criteria, check out the Salute to Excellence
2014 Volunteer Recognition Awards Nomination Form at Kansas 4-H.org under Resources and Volunteer Salute to Excellence, or click here. Van Horn

GET READY FOR 4-H MAPS & APPS
4-H National Headquarters and National 4-H Council are pleased to reveal the National Science Experiment for the 2013 4-H National Youth Science Day. 4-H Maps & Apps will introduce youth to the power of geospatial technologies and their unique ability to help us understand and improve our communities. Developed by Colorado State University Extension, this exciting activity will engage young people in ways to improve our environment with the help of geographic information systems (GIS) and global positioning systems (GPS).
The experiment will test the ability of young people to: - Use geospatial skills to create the ideal neighborhood park
- Become a community planner by using maps and layers to investigate and solve real-world problems, and
- Contribute data and their community to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) The National Map through The National Map Corps project.
Save the date! This annual youth science event will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2013, and will bring 4-H'ers together from all around the nation to complete this single, innovative activity. Participation in 4-H National Youth Science Day is meant to help spark an early passion for STEM education and to encourage young people to consider these paths of study and future careers.

FAQ FOR THE KSFAIR SYSTEM
Last year we put together a list of all of the questions that we had
about the KSFair system, following are those questions along with
possible solutions! If you encounter something that you do not see
below, please do not hesitate to contact us.
Q-I am not able to get logged into the system.
A-This
is most likely because you are new to extension within the last year.
This means that we will need to create you a new user account. Please
call 785-532-5800 and we will get you a new account.
Q-When I go in to enter someone into a class, the systemp appears to "stall out" and nothing happens.
A-This
means that there is a glitch in the system. Please call the State 4-H
Office and we will get that class fixed so that it doesn't happen to
others.
Q-I am confused about entering teams and individuals in the KSFair System. Do you type in the name? What do you do?
A- First off, you are NOT alone! The following is an example: for
the purposes of this demonstration, we are going to use a sample team.
Let’s pretend that we have 3 youth in a judging team and their
information is as follows:
Smurf 4-H Club Ima Smurf- 17 Youda Smurf- 16 Whosa Smurf- 18
For the sake of this example, let’s pretend that they are going to be entering crop identification judging. (This
process is the same process that is used for FCS Judging, Photography
Judging, Crop Identification Judging and Poultry Judging) This is a two part process.
Part 1-
Go to the KSFair system and log in. Click on Add Entry. You are first
going to register the TEAM in the KSFair system. Under name - type in
“Smurf, 4-H Club” or “4-H Club, Smurf”. Ultimately, you must use a comma
in the system for name. You are then going to click the square that
says “Team/Adult” so that you will not need to enter a birthdate, etc.
After you have done this, click “Go” at the bottom of your screen.
Then enter the number of the class that you are entering for class
number. It will pop up with another input screen that IS NOT required,
you can enter that information if you would like to, but it is not
necessary. You will then click finish. There are a few occasions when
the system will ask you if this is Team A, Team B or Team C. You will
need to mark one.
Part 2 -
After you click finish on Part 1, you will click add entry again on the
top of the screen. You will enter the individual’s name “Ima Smurf” and
her information should pop up. You will then enter Ima (your
individual) into the individual class of judging; in this case, it’s
Crops Identification Individual class. As you are filling this
information out and you press go, that will lead you to answer some
mandatory questions. You will need to mark whether this youth is on
Team A, Team B or Team C. You also have the option that they are just
entering as an individual and they are not on a judging team. You will
need to repeat this process for each of the judging members.
Q-
I am trying to enter Photography entries, there is a required field at
the bottom asking how many years the youth has been in this project
area. I am unsure, can I just estimate or guess?
A- Unfortunately,
no. The user will need to contact all applicable youth and find out the
exact number of years involved in this project. This information is
very important for judging purposes in this event as it determines what
class they will be entered into.
Q - I am trying to enter Horse Show Entries but the system will not let me
A-
This is because youth must have qualified at the District Horse Show
with a blue or purple ribbon; only these youth qualify for the KSF Horse
Show. These specific youth will already be pre-entered into the KSFAIR
Entry system by District Representatives by the time county staff begins
KSF entries.
This
does not apply to Horse Show Optionals, such as Snaffle Bit, Level 3
& 4 Horsemanship, Costume or Roping. County staff may create KSF
entries for youth in these areas. If a county staff member is not able to create a horse entry in Optionals please contact the State 4-H Office.
Q- It is past the deadline but I have youth who want to enter into an event, what do I do?
A-No problem. There is an extended deadline until August 20th
at 5pm for Extension Staff to edit entries. You may also create new
entries, but do not advertise this information to the public. Create the
entry as usual in the KSFAIR Entry System. No late fee will incur until
the extended deadline ends on August 20 at 5PM. If it is after August 20
at 5PM, all entries will incur a $25 late fee payment. If there is an
error on an entry card, we will need to create a new entry and a $25 fee
will incur.
I
am sure that there are additional questions that you have about the
KSFair system. You are more than welcome to contact me by e-mail keatley@ksu.edu, phone 785-532-5800,or you can skype me at sarah.laib. Keatley
