IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING ACCESS 4-H
We have recently learned that National 4-H Council has made the decision to discontinue the use of the ACCESS 4-H Online Management System effective March 2015. They have not been able to achieve the vision of a national data system through ACCESS 4-H and the business model was not sustainable. To better understand the reasoning behind the National 4-H Council's decision, click here.
This is difficult news for all of us and we are quickly trying to make sense of the implications for Kansas 4-H and make decisions about moving to a new enrollment system. We will transition to 4-HOnline, the enrollment management solution currently used by 19 state 4-H programs. We have been in discussion with the 4-HOnline team and feel confident that it is a robust and viable option to meet our state's enrollment management needs.
Here are some key points as we move forward: - ACCESS will still be used for the 4-H ES-237 2014 enrollment year.We are seeing an increase in enrollment in 4-H in Kansas and it is critical that your efforts are accurately reflected in ACCESS for the 2014 enrollment year. The deadline for the ES-237 is November 15, 2014.
- Beginning October 1, 2014 local units will enter their enrollment data for the 2015 enrollment year using 4-H Online.
- Face to face training and online training for both Extension professionals, program assistants and office professionals will be conducted across the state this fall to help set up local unit administrative platforms and preferences. Local units can bring their enrollment forms and learn how to enter data in 4-HOnline.
- A 4-HOnline transition group will be named, including extension agents, program assistants and office professionals, to consult on developing custom fields and determining local unit preferences.
I am acutely aware of the increased expectations that are being placed on local unit staff in relation to managing a quality 4-H Youth Development Program. Having a data management system that can efficiently collect and leverage enrollment data is critical for the support of local and state 4-H programs and to help make programmatic decisions. Although change is never easy, it is my goal that we work together so that the transition to 4-HOnline is smoother and less stressful than previous system changes. I will continue to update you frequently as we learn more. Stone

LAST CALL FOR 2015 KANSAS 4-H AND FFA WHEAT VARIETY PLOTS
It
is time to enroll for the 2015 Kansas 4-H and FFA
Wheat Variety Plot program. The program begins fall of 2014 and goes through
September 2015. The enrollment form and
program details are currently available here. Members are asked to contact their local
Extension Office immediately for information with enrollments due to the
Northwest Area Extension Office by July 25, 2014. Cost for 2014-15 will again be $30.00 to receive the
five varieties of wheat. This fee is now needed to contribute to the cost
of the wheat varieties. It is very important that we know the number of
participants early, so we can have enough seed and metal signs available for
Extension agents and leaders to pick up at the Kansas State Fair. New participants will receive a free large
plot sign, and five free individual variety signs. These will be distributed on Friday, September
5th at the 2014 Kansas State Fair.
Don’t
forget to pull your wheat samples for the Kansas State 4-H Wheat Show on Thursday,
August 7th at Pratt, and also for wheat samples at your county fair, that may
be eligible for the Kansas State Fair 4-H Crops Division. This year's participants who are getting
ready to harvest their plots should be planning their county fair display for
possible qualifying for the Kansas State Fair entry in the Showcase Building.

48 HOURS OF 4-H
According
to The 4-H study of Positive Youth Development, 4-Hers are nearly 4
times more likely to make contributions to their communities. But just
how much can they do? In one weekend this fall, 48-Hours of 4-H will
challenge club members, adult leaders and 4-H alumni to explore their
service capabilities and inspire the community around them by taking
part in some type of service project during the weekend of October
11-12, 2014. It might be a little project for a club or a big project
the whole district or county gets involved in. It will be awesome to
see what Kansas 4-H can accomplish during that time period.
On 48 Hours of 4-H webpage you will find the following: - Information about the event - A guide to plan a project that includes a timeline - Graphics to use for Promotion
Coming Soon: - Information about ordering shirts for the event - Online Registration for projects
Please follow the project on Facebook.

Kansas 4-H challenge is brought to you by the Kansas 4-H Youth
Leadership Council in conjunction with the K-State Research and
Extension Department of 4-H Youth Development with generous support from

BULLYING, SEXUAL AND DATING VIOLENCE REPORT
The National Institute of Justice, U.S. Department of Justice, has just released a new report that they funded entitled “Bullying, Sexual, and Dating Violence Trajectories From Early to Late Adolescence”, by Dorothy Espelage and Sabina Low, Co-investigators. The report is available here.
This study is a longitudinal examination of the impact of family abuse and conflict, self-reported delinquency, and peer delinquency on the development of bullying perpetration, sexual harassment perpetration, and teen dating violence perpetration among a large sample of young adolescents. The study included data collected from 1162 high school students who were part of the University of Illinois Study of Bullying and Sexual Violence Study funded by the Centers for Disease Control.
