KANSAS 4-H COMMUNICATION FACT SHEETS HELPFUL FOR 4-H DAY PRESENTATIONS
Speaking skillfully before an audience is one of the hallmarks that Kansas 4-H members have been successfully doing for over 100 years. Kansas youth through 4-H have learned the skills necessary to get up before an audience and eloquently speak. 4-H has helped youth learn the skills necessary to clearly organize and present thoughts and ideas through project talks, demonstrations, illustrated talks and public speaking presentations.
The complete Kansas 4-H communication fact sheet series is listed below. These may be helpful to Kansas 4-H families as they begin to prepare for county 4-H day presentations. They can be downloaded free from the Kansas 4-H web site. Visit: http://www.kansas4-h.org/p.aspx?tabid=72.

STEP #2 Randomly draw the name(s) from your eligible pool, complete the attached form, and make sure that it arrives at the State 4-H Office by close of business (5 PM), Tuesday, May 1, 2012.
Upon receipt of the nominees from local Extension Units, all names will be placed in a pool, randomly drawn and notified immediately as the state Standard of Excellence Delegates for 2012 National 4-H Congress. Van Horn
DISCOVERY DAYS CLASS INSTRUCTORS NEEDED!
Kansas 4-H Discovery Days is coming up and we are looking for class sessions to help youth discover new interests, passions and careers. This college experience on the K-State campus gives youth ages 13-19 the opportunity to learn in a variety of classes, tours and activities. Discovery Days is an excellent opportunity for our young people to explore potential careers, degree programs, personal development, hobbies, sports, and other interests. Examples of last year’s classes included: Career Possibilities in Law Enforcement, A Career for ‘U’ in Agriculture, Introduction to Basket Weaving and Rugby 101. The time you invest has great potential to impact these young people for their entire lives! We are now accepting class proposals to ensure we have enough spaces for more than 800 delegates we expect to attend this summer! This event has grown from 550 people in 2009 to 650 in 2010 to 750 in 2011! We need your help!!! The dates will be May 29-June 1, 2012 with 2 hour class sessions scheduled for Wednesday, May 30 and Thursday, May 31 from 9:30am-11:30am and 1:30pm-3:30pm. You can choose to teach one, two, three or even four class sessions. We would love to have you lead a class session this year! If you, or anyone else you know, are interested in teaching a class, hosting a tour, or leading a service project please fill out the online class proposal form at http://www.Kansas4-H.org/DiscoveryDays. You don’t have to be a master teacher to teach a class at Discovery Days. Just share your passion for what you do. We would like to have all proposals no later than Friday, February 10, so information can be compiled and sent to Extension staff to begin marketing. We plan to open on-line registration March 1. If you know anyone else who might have something fun to share with these youth, we would appreciate if you would forward this message to them! If you have any questions please feel free to contact me. Thank you so much for considering the opportunity to share your expertise with youth from across Kansas. Wiebers/James

2012 FILMFEST 4-H OPEN TO KANSANS
The second annual FilmFest 4-H, a national film festival open to all 4-H members ages 11 and up is coming! FilmFest will be held in Branson, MO, from August 5-8, with most of the events happening on August 6-7. The event will end by noon on August 8th. This event is sponsored by the National 4-H Communications and Expressive Arts Task force, Missouri’s 4-H Center for Youth Development, and the City of Branson.
Like any other national film festival, this event connects participants to professionals in the film industry and celebrates the work of the filmmakers. The difference is that our filmmakers are youth. The event includes film screenings, industry-related tours, and workshops lead by professionals in the film industry who have been attached to projects the youth recognize.
Last year’s workshops included “Lighting on the Set” with David Houlle, owner and operator of Sight & Sound Productions, who has worked on such films as Up in the Air ; “Documentaries and Television Programming” with Russ Weston of Weston Productions, whose work ranges from National Geographic and Dateline to Ice Road Truckers and Deadliest Catch ; “Acting for the Camera” with Scott-Arthur Allen, Director of the Creative Actors Workshop, who has coached actors such as Heather Locklear, Tea Leoni, Sela Ward, and Lisa Hartman Black; and several from the Academy Award nominated Winter’s Bone.
You do not have to be a filmmaker tied to a 4-H program to attend. However, most participants will be 4-H families, volunteers and youth who have an interest in filmmaking or the film industry. The competition categories planned for 2012 include Narrative, Animation, Documentary and 4-H Promotional.
Youth interested in attending FilmFest 4-H should visit the event web site at http://4h.missouri.edu/filmfest or contact: Bradd Anderson, Missouri 4-H Center for Youth Development, andersonb@missouri.edu, 573-884-0576.

LIFE’S LITTLE QUESTIONS – JOIN THE CLUB PROMOTIONAL ITEMS
The order form with “Life’s Little Questions – Join the Club” promotional items went out in December and was due back Dec. 19 to the Bookstore. The question was asked about ordering items beyond the due date.
Below is Nancy Zimmerli-Cates, Publishing Unit Leader, Department of Communications, response: “We are adding the new 4-H material to the promotional catalog. Either the catalog or additional copies of the 4-H order form should be available for mid-January meetings.
• The date on the form was for orders to be delivered in January, but any of the items may be ordered at any time. Many will be processed "on-demand." • The T-shirts will not be kept in stock, but ordered quarterly. • Quarterly order forms are tentatively scheduled for January, April, July, and October. Orders would be due by the end of each of those months. Our next order form is scheduled to go out Jan. 13, with orders due to the Bookstore by Feb. 1.
Normally orders are processed and in-stock items sent within a few days after the order is received.
Since the T-shirts require ordering from the vendor by size and quantity, we expect those orders to take several weeks from receipt to delivery. We need to allow time to compile orders, place our order with the vendor, receive the shirts into inventory, and ship them to the units that ordered.”
If you have additional questions, please let me know. Diane Mack

HEALTHY LIVING
Did you know that there's evidence that eating a healthy breakfast is essential to healthy weight? A new federal report (available at: http://www.cnpp.usda.gov/Publications/NutritionInsights/Insight45.pdf) states that "not eating breakfast has been associated with excess body weight, especially among children and adolescents." A healthy (nutrient-dense) breakfast might include:
• bowl of Raisin Bran Flakes, 1% milk, banana and 100% juice, or • one egg, bowl of oatmeal, orange, or • medium sized omelet with veggies, chicken and low fat cheese.
Our 4-H Healthy Living Ambassadors/Officers are discovering that they too need to practice healthy behaviors (ie., healthy eating, physical activity, stress management) so they can model it for other club/group members. And, as Linda Biles and I meet with the local 4-H Healthy Living pilot teams we share that adult mentors need to demonstrate these behaviors too. Consider:
• What are you eating for breakfast? • Are you physically active at least 20 minutes most days of the week? • Are you driving without 'attention-getting devices' like smart phones? • Are you and your club members joining Walk Kansas teams? (see: http://www.walkkansas.org/p.aspx?tabid=1 for Walk Kansas March 18 - May 12, 2012 )
SAVE THE DATE: Extension's Annual HealthFest! is April 13-14 at Rock Springs 4-H Center and will feature 4-H Healthy Living Ambassador/Officer pilot program successes, planning and curriculum training. More information will be available by late February.
