2014 KANSAS SALUTE TO EXCELLENCE
4-H is a community of young people across Kansas who are learning
leadership, citizenship, and life skills. Volunteers are the heartbeat of the
4-H program serving as mentors, teachers and friends. The National Salute to Excellence
Volunteer Recognition Award recognizes 4-H volunteers who demonstrate
exceptional service to 4-H. The Kansas Association 4-H Volunteers has adopted
the Salute to Excellence award to recognize and promote Kansas 4-H volunteers
who have excelled in their roles locally and continue with selecting Kansas’
top volunteers for National competition. The Kansas Association of
Volunteers believes establishing the Salute to Excellence Award will provide
two options for the Kansas 4-H Program: 1) recognition of 4-H Volunteers for
their outstanding contributions to 4-H youth and 2) enhance the mission and
awareness of the Kansas Association of 4-H Volunteers.
Each extension unit will select their representative and submit their
nominees electronically to Pam Van Horn by October 15. Those
individuals then will have an opportunity to submit application for the Kansas
Outstanding Lifetime Volunteer and Volunteer
of the Year. Kansas honorees then become Kansas’ nominees for the
national award. For specific selection criteria check out Salute to Excellence
2014 Volunteer Recognition Awards Nomination Form at Kansas 4-H.org under
“What’s Hot,” or by visiting http://www.kansas4-h.org/p.aspx?tabid=481.

organized after-school activities, residential and day camps or summer

CALL FOR OUT-OF-SCHOOL CONFERENCE EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS AND DISPLAYS
The Kansas Out-of-School Conference is searching for interesting,
easy-to use educational programs and activities that promote hands-on
learning for youth. We are looking for educational displays of
curricula and resources that inspire youth to become active learners and
can be easily adapted to out-of-school settings.
Educational
displays will be set up all day for viewing by participants. They do
NOT need to be staffed, but can be if you choose. Educational displays
should highlight resources that can enhance out-of-school programming
and/or hands-on learning. Each educational display will receive one 8'
table and two chairs.
Educational display proposals are due by July 15, 2013 to Beth Drescher, 7001 w. 21st St. N., Wichita, Ks 67205 or email to drescher@ksu.edu. Please include your name, address, email, phone, title and brief description of your display. Drescher

ACCESS TIP: REPORTING CAMPERS
Not only does reporting campers help your Extension by showing increased
participation on the ES-237 report, but it can simplify your work. Please report youth who attend 4-H Day and Overnight Camp in the ACCESS 4-H Enrollment System. To do this, you must create a club and title it as the Camp group name. Mark the "club" as Active and check the Charter Pending box; this will ensure your camping numbers appear on your ES-237 report for your local Extension. Next, select a proper Delivery Mode of either Day Camping or Overnight Camping. Unselect Primary Club, as this box is for 4-H Community Clubs. Once the camp is created, you may utilize the "Add a Person to this Club" field to locate and insert all applicable 4-H youth who attended in your county. You will need to create a "club" for each specific camp group that your county youth attend. It is okay if the same youth attends more than one camp! They key is showing all youth participations.
You could opt to create a group enrollment for camps instead of creating clubs in order to receive credit for your campers, but it's encouraged to track individual members' participation whenever possible. By creating a "club" for each of your camps, you are able to utilize ACCESS in many other helpful ways! You can run camp reports, obtain spreadsheets of camper information from ACCESS, bulk email or text your campers, and more. When next year rolls around, take advantage of ACCESS and send members of that camp a bulk email, inviting them to return to camp and provide the registration link!
A great resource from the National ACCESS Team shows you how to enter and utilize ACCESS for your camp data. Using ACCESS to manage your Camp Data is located on your Dashboard under Recorded Webinars. Williams

2014 KANSAS 4-H AND FFA WHEAT VARIETY PLOT ENROLLMENT OPEN
As wheat harvest
approaches it is time to remind members to re-enroll or ask new members to
enroll for the 2014 Kansas 4-H and FFA
Wheat Variety Plot program. The program begins fall of 2013 and goes through
September 2014. The enrollment form and
program details are currently available.
Visit: http://www.kansas4-h.org/p.aspx?tabid=297.
Members are asked to contact their local
Extension Office by July 10 for information with enrollments due to the
Northwest Area Extension Office by July 22, 2013.
Cost
for 2013-14 will again be $30.00 to receive the five varieties of wheat.
This fee is now needed to contribute to the cost of the wheat varieties. It
is very important that we know the number of participants early, so we can have
enough seed and metal signs available for Extension agents and leaders to pick
up at the Kansas State Fair. New
participants will receive a free large plot sign, and five free individual
variety signs. These will be distributed
on Friday, September 6th at the 2013 Kansas State Fair.
Don’t forget to
pull your wheat samples for the Kansas State 4-H Wheat Show on Thursday, August
1st at Great Bend, and also for wheat samples at your county fair,
that may be eligible for the Kansas State Fair 4-H Crops Division. This year's
participants who are getting ready to harvest their plots should be planning
their county fair display for possible qualifying for the Kansas State Fair
entry in the Showcase Building. For more information, contact Deryl
Waldren at 785-462-6281 or e-mail dwaldren@ksu.edu. Waldren

KANSAS 4-H ENVIRONMENTAL LEADERSHIP CAMP
In
the United States, children ages 6-11 spend about thirty hours a week
looking at a TV or computer monitor. 11-18 year olds spend 45 hours a
week plugged in. Let's unplug this summer and spend some quality time
outside! This camp aims to create awareness and understanding of
environmental issues that will lead to responsible individual and group
actions. Register for this camp and receive quality environmental
education from trained facilitator educators to study ecosystems,
conservation of natural resources, plant and animal diversity. Hear from
guest speakers, experts in the areas of raptors, forestry, wildlife and
aquatics, plus get to participate in the traditional camp activities of
archery, canoes, swimming and campfires. Meet new friends from all over
the state interested in natural resources and the environment and
complete a service project and learn how to start one in your own
community.
This camp is open to all youth 10-14 years of age. Non 4-H'ers are encouraged to register.
This
camp would serve to benefit 4-H'ers involved in or wanting to learn
more about the following projects: wildlife, entomology, plant science,
Energy Management, Environmental Science, Citizenship and
Self-Determined.
When: Monday, August 5, 2013 - Friday, August 9, 2013 9:00 AM - 1:30 PM Central Time

Thanks to all the agents and others who helped locate host families and conduct interviews! We have a great group of families well distributed across the state. Please include IFYE’s in 4-H events during their stay in your Extension unit. We also encourage them to be involved in media interviews and presentations about their countries. These activities multiply the impact in communities and enhance the experience for both IFYE’s and their host communities. Many 4-H’ers are inspired to broaden their world views and want to travel abroad by meeting an inbound IFYE. Munson
