EDUCATOR'S GUIDE: EXPLORING KANSAS NATURAL RESOURCES
Kansas Foundation for Agriculture in the Classroom (KFAC) has provided this great Natural Resources Guide for teachers with students in 5th -8th grade through the Extension Distribution Center for only the cost of shipping and handling!! The guide is on the April Order form as 4H1021. The Guide has units on: prairies, cropland, Kansas crops, forests, water overview, streams and rivers, ponds and lakes, wetlands, aquifers and careers in agriculture. Counties are encouraged to order extra copies and take them to local teachers as a resource. If ordering multiple copies, KFAC asks that you provide them a list of teachers that received a copy, so that they may be offered additional opportunities to use future KFAC publications. Teachers who have used the guide have given it rave reviews in helping students learn about Kansas natural resources and meet school curriculum standards. KFAC believes that each local Extension office would see the guide as an excellent resource for teaching agriculture in your local classrooms either by Ag. and Natural Resource Agents or through 5-8th grade teachers.

NEW STATE FAIR CLASSES FOR ENTOMOLOGY PROJECT
Please
share with your Entomology Project Leaders that there are new State Fair classes
called entomology collection notebooks.
The idea is for 4-Her's to take
pictures of insects and make a notebook to display their work. We hope the
project will be attractive to kids that like to study insects, but don't have
the ability or desire to collect and pin the specimens. The notebooks can be a
substitute or an addition to the standard insect collections or educational
displays. Requirements for the classes and other details can be found at http://www.entomology.ksu.edu/4-H

POSITIVE YOUTH DEVELOPMENT
Designing Digital Experiences for Positive Youth Development
From Playpen to Playground by Marina Umaschi Bers. With the advent of the digital age, research on the psychological impact of youth engagement with technology has surged. New technologies have often taken the blame for promoting negative (and potentially dangerous) youth experiences, such as cyber-bullying, sexual predation, privacy invasion, addiction to video games, and exposure to violence. For many children and adolescents, however, digital media and technology provide positive ways to express identity, communicate with peers, and engage in civic activities across communities.
Based on over a decade and a half of research, Designing Digital Experiences for Positive Youth Development aims to guide readers in the design of digital technologies to promote positive behaviors in children and teenagers. Highlighting the positive impact of new technologies in various domains across the developmental span, from early childhood to late adolescence, the book explores how young people are using technology today, how these experiences influence different age groups and domains, and how mastering technological literacy can lead to confidence, competence, and developmental growth.
Following this exploration, the author presents her own theoretical framework (coined Positive Technological Development, or PTD) for designing and evaluating programs to support children and teenagers’ positive uses of technology. Each chapter is supplemented with vignettes describing, from a developmental perspective, the diverse experiences of today’s youth with current technology. Case studies are then presented that illustrate how PTD has effectively informed the design of educational programs. Offering a fresh perspective that bridges digital media and youth development models, this book is an important resource for educators, policy makers, and mental health professionals, as well as researchers interested in child development, psychology, and learning technologies.
Marina Umaschi Bers, Ph.D., is Associate Professor at the Eliot-Pearson Department of Child Development and Adjunct Professor in the Computer Science Department at Tufts University, where she heads the interdisciplinary Developmental Technologies (DevTech) research group.

2012 4-H CAMPFERENCE
The Kansas 4-H Youth
Leadership Council is excited to promote Campference!
This event is focused on
youth ages 12- 14 (before January 1, 2012), and will be held June 15-18, 2012,
