GRANTS AVAILABLE FOR FOSTER CHILDREN
Kansas
4-H Youth Development, the Kansas 4-H Foundation and Saint Francis
Community Services are working together to provide funding opportunities
for children and families involved with foster care. The purpose of the
Kansas 4-H Resource Family Project and Camp Grant Programs is to
provide financial assistance for foster youth and their resource
families who want to participate in learning opportunities available
through 4-H. Kansas 4-H is open to all youth ages 7 through
18 wanting to expand their learning opportunities. 4-H focuses on
developing confident, capable, caring, responsible citizens. 4-H offers a
wide range of project areas that youth may learn from, ranging from
agriculture to food and nutrition to aerospace and photography. Although
being involved in the local club can provide an opportunity for youth
to learn from each other and contribute to others through community
service projects, volunteers and family support are also important
elements of 4-H as volunteers and parents serve as club and project
leaders that guide and mentor youth. Through the Kansas 4-H Foundation,
$5,000 in grant funds are available to support foster care families and the
children in their care who are current or potential 4-H members. Grants due May 1!Family Project Grants- Children must enroll as 4-H members through their local extension office.

during the 4-H year such as purchasing a camera, craft supplies,
clothing, feed, equipment, etc.

livestock project; however, funds are not available for the purchase of
pets or livestock.

- Liability, maintenance and warranty of the items and supplies purchased become the responsibility of the eligible 4-H member.
- Grant application and instructions available on the Kansas 4-H Web site, www.kansas4-h.org/p.aspx?tabid=434.

· Project member may exhibit at local fair with
a borrowed 4-H Identified horse in the showmanship class only. No riding.

4-H HORSE ID'S DUE MAY 1
Horse deadlines are quickly approaching … therefore let’s
review a few frequently asked questions.
Horse Ownership: Youth may own the horse themselves, or
use a family-owned horse (immediate family: mother, father, stepparent,
brother, sister, grandparent, or legal guardian).
Leasing: The leasing option is intended for youth who
are unable to participate fully in the 4-H horse project because they do not have
access to family-owned horses. A 4-H
member may identify only one leased horse per year, and MAY NOT identify any
family-owned horse if a leased horse has been identified. However, if member is enrolled in 2 or 3 –year-old
snaffle bit please double check with rules on page 7 of the Horse Show Rule
Book for further clarification.
If a 4-H member leases his or her project horse to another
4-H member, the leaser forfeits the right to use the horse.
Sharing project
horses: Siblings may show the same
horse provided they are not in the same class.
If both are in the same age classification, they must decide what
classes each will show in.
2 –year and 3-year old Snaffle-bit: No one is allowed to ride this nominated
horse except you from May 1 until the conclusion of the Kansas State Fair. This
includes a trainer, parents, horseless horse member, another 4-H member,
sibling, potential buyer, etc. Van Horn
4-H SHOOTING SPORTS BASICS
Has 4-H Shooting Sports got you confused? A quick
summary of the 4-H Shooting Sports project when you are baffled about the
requirements can be found at http://www.kansas4-h.org/p.aspx?tabid=291 under Shooting Sports Agent Summary on the right hand side of the page. The one-page

STATE 4-H GEOLOGY FIELD TRIPS
The State 4-H Geology Field Trips will be held June 12-14, 2015. Two trips are offered the same weekend. The South Central Kansas trip headquarters are in Fredonia. The Southeast Kansas trip is based out of the Girard area. This is the second year of the two year rotation for these two trip locations.
The state trips provide excellent opportunities for youth in the Geology project to learn more about the geology of Kansas, interact with trained geologists and geology leaders, go on collecting trips, participate in quiz bowl and judging contest events, and attend workshops. Everyone attending the trips (adults and youth) must register online through C-vent.Detailed information about the two trips is located on the Geology Field Trip page. Registration opens April 15, 2015. The registration deadline is May 22, 2015. Neier
KANSAS 4-H CENTENNIAL DELEGATES
The Kansas 4-H Centennial Delegates were added in 2002 when national 4-H celebrated 4-H’s centennial year. Kansas 4-H has permitted each Extension Unit to send one at-large delegate to National 4-H Congress. These at-large positions are called Centennial Delegates. Cost for the Centennial delegate will be the full amount of approximately $1,150.00 (no registration grant is offered). The selection criteria and process for the 4-H Centennial Delegate is entirely up to the Extension Unit. To be eligible, delegates MUST:
Have never before attended National 4-H Congress Be enrolled in Kansas 4-H Have a genuine desire to attend National 4-H Congress Be available to attend 2015 National 4-H Congress in its entirety from Nov 27 - Dec 1, 2015 Be at least 14 years old but not yet 19 years old before January 1, 2015 Remain committed to attending 2015 National 4-H Congress once they accept the trip Agree to the follow the prescribed code of conduct, realizing failure to do so may result in the loss of privileges during the event and/or in the future
Participating Extension Units will need to notify the State 4-H Office on or before May 15, 2015, along with providing the non-refundable $100.00 deposit and nomination form for the delegate. To help with planning, remember that the Standard of Excellence representatives to Congress will be named immediately following the May 1 deadline and if their name is not drawn, can be re-nominated as a Centennial delegate. KANSAS 4-H STANDARD OF EXCELLENCE DELEGATES - NATIONAL 4-H CONGRESS
Standard of Excellence Delegates represent all of the recipients of the Kansas 4-H Key Award during the previous 4-H year.
Seven Congress Standard of Excellence Delegates are randomly drawn from names sent to the State 4-H Office. Each Extension Unit made up of only one county may submit one name. Extension Units (districts) made up of more than one county may send as many names equal to the number of counties that comprise the district. (Note: The names may come from anywhere in the District). Extension Units please select your name(s) in the following manner: STEP #1. Create a pool of names consisting of ALL 4-H Key Award winners in 2014 who meet the following criteria -
Were presented the Kansas 4-H Key Award in 2014 Have never attended National 4-H Congress before Are enrolled in Kansas 4-H Have a genuine desire to attend National 4-H Congress Are available to attend 2015 National 4-H Congress in its entirety from Nov 27- Dec 1, 2015 Are at least 16 years old but not yet 19 years old before January 1, 2015 Willing to remain committed to attending 2015 National 4-H Congress once they accept the trip Agree to the follow the prescribed code of conduct, realizing failure to do so may result in the loss of privileges during the event and/or in the future
STEP #2. Randomly draw the name(s) from your eligible pool, complete the form, and make sure that it arrives at the State 4-H Office by close of business (5 PM), May 1, 2015.
Upon receipt of the nominees from local Extension Units, all names will be placed in a pool, randomly drawn and notified immediately as the state Standard of Excellence Delegates for 2015 National 4-H Congress.

2015 KANSAS 4-H DOG CARE AND TRAINING PROJECT CHANGES
Periodically the Kansas 4-H
Dog Care and Training Project shares changes as they affect 4-H dog shows
including the Kansas State Fair 4-H Dog Show.
For questions, contact Deryl E. Waldren, 785-462-6281 or dwaldren@ksu.edu.
-For 4-H Dog Agility Trials - effective
immediately the crawl tunnel can be replaced with the hoop
tunnel for Agility II and Agility III.
-For Obedience, the handler
is allowed to touch the dog during the stand for exam and between exercises (while not being judged). An example of
this would be petting your dog as praise after the judge declares
"exercise finished." Touching
the dog during an exercise will
result in points being deducted for extra commands and possible other
deductions (case-by-case determination).
-Questions asked by the judge to the 4-H member during showmanship
should include personal dog questions about the breed, gender, feed and care of
the dog, etc. The intent of the judge
asking personal dog questions is to put the 4-H member at ease. Other general knowledge questions about dogs
should not be asked at that time.
-2015
Kansas State Fair 4-H Dog Show fee - A $5.00 entry fee per class with a maximum
of $15.00 per individual will be due to the Kansas State 4-H Office with all
Kansas State Fair 4-H Dog Show entries by August 15.
-2016 Kansas State Fair 4-H Dog Show fee – A $5.00
entry fee per class with a maximum of $30.00 per individual will be due to the
Kansas State 4-H Office with all Kansas State Fair 4-H Dog Show entries by
August 15, 2016.

2016 KANSAS 4-H AND FFA WHEAT VARIETY PLOT ENROLLMENT OPEN
As
wheat harvest approaches it is time to remind members to re-enroll or ask new
members to enroll for the 2016 Kansas 4-H and FFA
Wheat Variety Plot program. The program begins fall of 2015 and goes through
September 2016. The enrollment form and
program details are currently available.
Visit: http://www.kansas4-h.org/p.aspx?tabid=297.
Members are asked to contact their local
Extension Office by July 10 for information with enrollments due to the
Northwest Area Extension Office by July 24, 2015. Cost for 2015-16 will again be $30.00 to receive the
five varieties of wheat. This fee is now needed to contribute to the cost
of the wheat varieties. It is very important that we know the number of
participants early, so we can have enough seed and metal signs available for
Extension agents and leaders to pick up at the Kansas State Fair. New participants will receive a free large
plot sign, and five free individual variety signs. These will be distributed on Friday,
September 11th at the 2015 Kansas State Fair.
Don’t
forget to pull your wheat samples for the Kansas State 4-H Wheat Show on Thursday,
August 6th at Hays, and also for wheat samples at your county fair, that may be
eligible for the Kansas State Fair 4-H Crops Division. Resource information for the
wheat variety project includes: (1) Wheat Variety Plot Brochure, 4-H 565 Revised
2010,) (2) Wheat Variety Plot--Youth Participant Handbook, 4-H 566, Revised
2010, and (3) 4-H Wheat Variety Plot Record, P1099, Revised 2010. To download these files, visit: http://www.kansas4-h.org/p.aspx?tabid=297. This year's participants who are getting
ready to harvest their plots should be planning their county fair display for
possible qualifying for the Kansas State Fair entry in the Showcase Building.

Two

Labette (Wildcat District), and Chase (Flint Hills District) Counties. These
families are still in the screening process.

organization in any activities during the time they are in your unit and
facilitate opportunities for sharing. Thanks for your counsel and completing in-home
Interviews for the families. Waldren/Munson
HOSTS STILL NEEDED FOR KANSAS INTERNATIONAL 4-H YOUTH EXCHANGEES (IFYE)
The
other U.S. partner organization Kansas 4-H works with for international
exchanges is IFYE. IFYE USA, Inc. owns the logo and
supports only exchanges in the 4-H alumni age group. The exchangees we host can be placed with 4-H
families with children of any age or others in the community. We prefer to place them with families who
support 4-H youth programs and are willing to involve them with young people
during their stay. Each family usually
hosts for 2-3 weeks, with
multiple families hosting during the exchangee’s stay in Kansas. This
summer, exchangees representing youth groups in Germany, Scotland, Taiwan and
Wales, will arrive June 21 and have four families between then and the Kansas
State Fair. An exchangee from Austria
will need two hosts between July 7 and August 11. The three men all come from farms and
indicate they plan careers in agriculture.
We are looking for farm families to host them though others may host as well. Una
from Taiwan represents the 4-H program in her country and wants to learn as
much as she can about 4-H programs and experiential learning. The Scottish girl is interested in the U.S culture. She still needs one host family. Please
let families know about the opportunity to host young adults for a short period
this summer. Here is a brief summary of
the IFYEs, a little background on each, and the periods they need hosts. For more information or to request an IFYE
and time to host, contact Mary Kay Munson at 785-238-3631 or munson@ksbroadband.net.

4-H CAMPFERENCE 2015
4-H Campference is for youth ages 12- 14 (before January 1, 2015), and will be held May 31-June 3, 2015 at Rock Springs 4-H Center. Participants will experience the feel of a conference, while enjoying the 'camp' activities Rock Springs 4-H Center has to offer. This is a great transitional opportunity, as these tweens go from being a camper to attending educational conferences. 4-H Campference will feature workshops about opportunities in the 4-H program and how to better interact with others. Participants will meet other youth from around the state of Kansas.
484H PROMOTION KITS FOR EXTENSION UNITS
Mark your calendars now for October 10-11, 2015. Lots more information coming in the next two months. We are offering a promotion kit and other items too for Extension Units. The Promotion Kit would be perfect for fairs, day camps and other summer activities to get the word out about the 48 Hours of 4-H Service Challenge, provide some door prizes and have some nice displays. In addition to the kit, we have vinyl banners and individual items as well. Because of the cost of shipping, we plan to have these items available for you to pick up during 4-H Discovery Days. Just to clarify, this is a promotion kit for Extension Units, we will still have an opportunity for clubs and groups to order shirts later in the summer, so they will have them for their service events.
You can look at or download catalog of the items on the 484H Website, copies of the flier and the order form. You do need to log in and things will be in the right hand column. If you have questions please contact binshaw@ksu.edu Orders due by April 27.
We will have the handbook/guide updated soon, and downloadable art for your webpages, Facebook Pages , newsletters, etc… Hinshaw
