NATIONAL WESTERN CATCH-A-CALF PROGRAM
The National Western Stock Show Catch-A-Calf
Program is a great program designed to promote youth development and
understanding of the cattle industry. This program can provide youth
with an opportunity to be part of one of the best programs at the
National Western Stock Show. Youth who choose to participate in the contest
may have a range of experiences in raising, feeding and showing beef
cattle, all are acceptable.
Applicants must be between the ages of 12
and 18 as of December 31, 2012
to apply, they must also be enrolled in 4-H at the time of application.
Successful catchers must have adequate facilities available to house
their steer as they are responsible for the care, feeding, and handling
of their animal. The applications to participate in this year’s
Catch-a-Calf program at the NWSS are now available on line at http://www.nationalwestern.com/catch-a-calf/ Adams

Campaign items include: 3 panel Life’s Little Question display, 250 fliers, and a set of 15 posters valued at $135.00. Funds for the tool kits are provided by a “Grow 4-H” grant, from the Kansas 4-H Foundation. In order to receive a tool kit, each part of the action plan must be completed. Local youth population data and 4-H enrollment data was sent in an e-mail from me in mid August to help as well. Complete the action plan on the google form at: http://tinyurl.com/6uzevcv
There are still 18 tool kits available. If you need help in completing the plan, please call me, I’d be glad to walk you through the process. Parts of the plan include: Current Situation: Include club membership enrollment from the past three years and youth population trends of 7 to 18 year olds, based on 2010 US Census data. Goal: Write a concise goal for increase in membership. SMART goals are specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and include a timeline.

NEW FCS PROJECT MEETING TOPICS
With the start of the new club year, the Family and Consumer Sciences Action team has once again prepared a list of topics which we encourage agents and project leaders to use for clothing and textiles, family studies, foods and nutrition, and health projects. These topics can be used for project meetings, incorporated into club meetings, camp activities, and other extension unit programming. These topics will be used when writing classes for the 2013 state 4-H Family and Consumer Sciences Judging Contest. Especially this year, in the process of researching and reviewing potential sources, we found that the websites and their content changed in just a short period of time. Therefore, staff and leaders are encouraged to obtain copies of these materials now, at the beginning of the club year.
The topics may be found by going to the Family and Consumer Sciences action team page at www.kansas4h.org. Most of the internet sources are linked; National 4-H Curriculum can be ordered from www.ksre.ksu.edu/library or www.4-hmall.org. Biles

4-H CLOVERBUDS
As we begin our a new 4-H
year let’s take a quick review on 4-H Cloverbuds, a special activity for our
5-and 6-year olds. Activities this age group enjoy doing include: running,
jumping, singing, drawing, painting and coloring. However don’t forgot that
when 5-and 6-year olds do these activities it’s not for very long - probably 10
- 15 minutes tops! So when planning 4-H Cloverbuds activities remember age
appropriateness.
Activity
|
Age Appropriate
|
Cloverbuds meeting with 3 - 4 lessons; each lesson 10 minutes long
|
Yes - short learning
opportunities matches well with 5- and 6-year olds attention spans.
|
4-H Club Business Meeting
|
No - most club meeting
average 1-1½ hours in length and parliamentary procedures are abstract and
beyond the 5- and 6-year olds capabilities to understand.
|
Refreshments
|
Yes - healthy snacks that
encourage good nutrition and well-being.
|
Project Meeting
|
No - most project meetings
average 1 -1½ hours studying one subject with limited variety and most 5-and
6-year olds attention span are limited to10-15 minutes and therefore they
become bored easily.
|
Show and Tell
|
Yes - encourages youth to
share what they are learning with others in a noncompetitive environment
promoting free expression.

KANSAS 4-H WEBSITE
Just a reminder, we will switch to the new State 4-H website
in the coming weeks, but wanted to make you aware of some of the changes you
can see already:
- On the current left hand vertical navigation the lower
6 topics say “new”. Those topics will become our horizontal
navigation. The 4-H Page will work and look much like the main KSRE page.
- We encourage you to start using those lower 6
tabs. It will prepare you for the changes once the site is converted
over.
- If you find broken or missing links, please email Hope
James, hjames@ksu.edu and
she can fix them.
Thank you for your help in helping us work out the
kinks. We are planning for these changes to go live on Thursday,
November 1. Our commitment to improve our State 4-H Website is part of
our 4-H Strategic Priorities, “Effective 4-H Systems and Structures”.
We expect that things might be difficult to find at first,
simply because they aren’t where they used to be! Please call our office professionals in the
State 4-H Office, they are ready to assist you in finding what you need.
Thanks for your patience as we move forward!
