ES-237 REPORT PREPARATION
It’s time to begin preparing for the annual ES-237 report in ACCESS! If you have not begun already, I recommend checking your data for accuracy. You may run your ES-237 in ACCESS at any time for review. The goal is to create an accurate reflection of your local Extension's 4-H programming efforts. Remember, any youth outreach using 4-H curricula should be entered into ACCESS and counted towards your ES-237.
The following 4-H Program data should exist in the ACCESS 4-H Enrollment System:
- All Organized 4-H Clubs (including Cloverbud, Project, and SPIN Clubs)
- Youth (club) members
- Youth projects, activities and certifications
- All Group Enrollments (if 6 hours or more)
- Demographic information for all members and Group Enrollments
- Youth Day Campers (camp "club" format)
- Youth Overnight Campers (camp "club" format)
- Youth Leaders in Clubs (aka Youth Volunteers)
- Junior/Project Leaders in projects (aka Youth Volunteers)
- Adult Volunteers (club leaders, project leaders, general county volunteers)
If data is not appearing on your ES-237 properly, corrections can be made up until the November 15th deadline. Please utilize the Kansas ES-237 Resource Guide found at kansas4-H.org under Staff Resources on the ACCESS 4-H page. You will need to log in to access this page. This short manual explains everything staff needs to know to complete and submit the report. Please contact Terry Williams at tewillia@ksu.edu with questions or for further assistance. I am happy to help! Williams
KANSAS’ SALUTE TO EXCELLENCE AWARDS
4-H is a community of young people across Kansas who are learning
leadership, citizenship, and life skills. Volunteers are the heartbeat of the
4-H program serving as mentors, teachers and friends. The National Salute to Excellence
Volunteer Recognition Award recognizes 4-H volunteers who demonstrate
exceptional service to 4-H. The Kansas Association 4-H Volunteers has adopted
the Salute to Excellence award to recognize and promote Kansas 4-H volunteers
who have excelled in their roles locally and continue with selecting Kansas’
top volunteers for National competition. The Kansas Association of
Volunteers believes establishing the Salute to Excellence Award will provide
two options for the Kansas 4-H Program: 1) recognition of 4-H Volunteers for
their outstanding contributions to 4-H youth and 2) enhance the mission and
awareness of the Kansas Association of 4-H Volunteers.
Each extension unit will select their representative and submit their
nominees electronically to Pam Van Horn by October 15. Those
individuals then will have an opportunity to submit application for the Kansas
Outstanding Lifetime Volunteer and Volunteer
of the Year. Kansas honorees then become Kansas’ nominees
for the
national award. For specific selection criteria, check out the Salute to
Excellence
2014 Volunteer Recognition Awards Nomination Form at Kansas 4-H.org
under Resources and Volunteer Salute to Excellence, or click here. Van Horn

IMPORTANT PHOTOGRAPHY NOTICE
The following is from Julie La Combe, Executive Director, Kansas Operation Lifesaver (an organization that works to promote safety around railroad tracks. Kansas Operation Lifesaver would like to offer safety information as it relates to photography.
Posing on or taking photos from railroad tracks is a practice that is both dangerous and illegal. If you trespass while photographing, you can receive a citation, fine, jail time, or more severe consequences such as injury or death. Trains do not stop quickly and you may not see or hear one coming until it is too late. We call on the 4-H community to partner with us as messengers of safety and responsibility, and ask that photos are never taken while trespassing.
For this reason, photos taken from railroad right of way property are not to be taken or displayed in Kansas 4-H Photography. This information will also appear on the 4-H Photography project page on the Kansas 4-H website. Stone and Buchele

2014 PRUDENTIAL SPIRIT OF COMMUNITY AWARDS
The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards represents the annual search for our nation's top youth volunteers. Last year, 175 county 4-H programs selected honorees in this prestigious youth recognition program. This recognition is extremely beneficial to 4-H'ers who have performed exemplary acts of service in their communities and to 4-H as a whole. The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program, sponsored by Prudential Financial in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals, recognizes individuals in grades 5-12 solely on the basis of their volunteer activities. 4-H'ers can apply online at http://spirit.prudential.com or www.nassp.org/spirit . Applications must be submitted to a county Extension agent by November 5, 2013. Then, each county 4-H program can select one middle level Local Honoree for every 1,000 members (or portion thereof) in grades 5-8 and one high school Local Honoree for every 1,000 members in grades 9-12. Once county 4-H programs have selected local honorees, they must certify those applications by November 12, 2013, to a state-level judging committee, which will pick the top youth volunteers in each state and the District of Columbia. All state-level honorees receive special recognition, while the top high school and middle level volunteer in each state and the District of Columbia receive silver medallions, $1,000 awards, and a fabulous trip to the nation's capital for national recognition events. In Washington, a national selection committee will name America's top 10 youth volunteers for 2014. Each will win an additional $5,000, a gold medallion, a crystal trophy, and a $5,000 grant from The Prudential Foundation for a charitable nonprofit organization of his or her choice. Additional information is available at http://spirit.prudential.com. By participating, we can applaud the terrific volunteer work of 4-H'ers and highlight the emphasis that the 4-H community of young people across America places on community involvement.
