LAST ISSUE OF THE KANSAS 4-H JOURNAL
The upcoming project selection guide will be the last issue of the Kansas 4-H Journal. It has been our great joy to share 4-H stories and information for the past 64 years, and we are eternally grateful to the many sponsors and local 4-H supporters who have made this magazine possible. The sponsors will receive a letter from us next week, and if you need an updated sponsor list so you can personally thank them, give us a call. In the future, watch for 4-H news on the Kansas 4-H website, Facebook page and twitter. You will find additional 4-H information on the Kansas 4-H Foundation website and Facebook page as well as the Alumni and Rock Springs 4-H website and Facebook page. IS YOUR 2014 ES-237 COMPLETE?
The ES-237 is an annual report required by the USDA, which involves every local Extension office and the State 4-H office through the use of the state enrollment system. It is a collaborative report containing a break down of 4-H clubs, activities and projects, youth demographics and volunteer information. Simply put, when each local Extension unit enters their 4-H Program data into the state enrollment system, they are essentially populating their yearly ES-237 Report.
The ACCESS 4-HOnline Enrollment System will be utilized to populate the 2014 Kansas ES-237 (October 1, 2013 - September 30, 2014 4-H Program Year). The deadline for Extension units to enter this data into ACCESS is November 15, 2014. Please finish the process by completing the 2014 ES-237 Quality Assurance & Submission Form. This form provides the resources needed to ensure accuracy and the means to inform the State 4-H office that you are finished with your report.
If you are having trouble balancing your 4-H Program data in ACCESS, please contact Justin Wiebers for assistance at jwiebers@ksu.edu.

4-H CLOVERBUDS AND EXTENSION POLICIES
When 4-H and/or Extension plans, organizes and facilitates a
livestock, small animal, horse or pre or post-fair activity please double check that 4-H Policies are
being followed. An area of concern is 4-H Cloverbuds. The program was designed for
5-and 6-year-olds. Cloverbuds is activity-focused, rather than project –focused.
Furthermore, 4-H Cloverbuds members may not participate in any competitive 4-H
events. 4-H Cloverbuds members many showcase their exhibits at fairs and public
events. 4-H Cloverbuds may not have 4-H livestock projects that require
long-term, ongoing care or weigh-ins, nor can the member participate as a
competitive 4-H exhibitor within livestock divisions.
For more information referring
to 4-H Cloverbuds, please check the Kansas Department of 4-H Youth Development Policy Guide,
section D3 4-H Cloverbuds, page 8 or checking the Cloverbuds page. VanHorn
REACHING 1ST GENERATION 4-H FAMILIES GRANT
The Department of 4-H Youth Development and Kansas 4-H Foundation are pleased to announce the Reaching 1st Generation 4-H Families grant for 2014 – 2015. The purpose of this project is to engage Hispanic youth and their families, in southwest Kansas, in safe and active learning experiences that are grounded in positive youth development. Those units with significant qualifications “primarily in southwest Kansas” are encouraged to apply.
The primary goal of the project is to expand local programs in which undeserved youth fully participate in 4-H and engage in relevant and age appropriate programming in science, health and leadership development. A secondary goal is to establish new clubs or integrate youth and their families in existing clubs that are culturally sensitive and relevant to the needs and interests of the new families.
Applications for this RFA are due October 1. Grants will be awarded in the amount of $1,000 which may be used for program materials and supplies, volunteer screening, educational opportunities, youth scholarships and local unit support.
Grants will be for one year, with an option for extending participation in year two, pending satisfactory completion of year one. Grants start mid October 2014 and end September 30, 2015.
Information can be found here.
Contact Diane Mack at dmack@ksu.edu for more information. Mack
NEW 4-H SPIN CLUB RESOURCES AVAILABLE
The purpose of 4-H SPIN Clubs is to expand opportunities for
youth and adults to experience and benefit from the Kansas 4-H youth
development program. Through 4-H SPIN Clubs, youth not typically part of 4-H will participate in sustained 4-H youth
development activities led by adult volunteers. In 4-H SPIN Clubs, youth will
learn about a subject of interest to them, have positive interactions with
their peers, and develop life skills.
Newly developed resources are available to help with all
aspects of SPIN club programming from recruiting volunteers to surveying the
interests of youth. Resources can be found here.
To learn more about 4-H SPIN clubs, plan to attend a session
at Annual Conference on Oct. 22, at 1:15 p.m.
If you have SPIN clubs in your unit, be sure to follow the
directions on how to add members to ACCESS which is on the Best Management
Practices Document. We want everyone counted in a
consistent way.

STANDARDS FOR 4-H AND FFA
During
this time of gearing up for a new 4-H year questions arise that might
become challenging in the future. To assist Extension Agents and
Agricultural Education Instructors/FFA Advisors, FFA and 4-H has been
working together to develop standard for our dual members and other
participants. Our premise for the standards were to
level-the-playing-field for all participating members. The document is
as follows:
Standards for Participation in Kansas
FFA and 4-H Youth Development Educational Opportunities
The purpose of the standards
outlined below are to assist in determining eligible participation in FFA
and/or
4-H Youth Development
learning experiences. Both 4-H and Agriculture Education/FFA promote teaching
youth life skills. Each program exists
to maximize the participants’ knowledge of agriculture and its value to our
communities while educating the young people to become productive citizens. Eligible youth may participate in both 4-H
and FFA but should avoid duplication. The following standards of participation
are used in delivering the 4-H and FFA programs in Kansas.
- Agriculture
Education teachers, FFA Advisors, Extension staff and local volunteers are
encouraged to cooperate in sharing information and resources to provide
educational opportunities for youth.
- When young people
are members of both 4-H and FFA, they must plan and manage separate projects,
and/or supervised agriculture experiences (SAE) programs.
- FFA and 4-H
members may enroll in the same area of experience in 4-H and FFA, however;
participants cannot identify, nominate, manage, keep records on, or exhibit the
same plants, animals, etc. in both organizations. Members must designate
exhibits as either FFA or 4-H at weigh-in, registration or similar deadline.
- Members may
participate in judging contests and related events in FFA and 4-H but cannot
represent both organizations at a contest, show or event at the same time.
- When 4-H and FFA
are conducting collaborating activities, both the 4-H and FFA organizations
must be represented through emblems and information on all signs, print
materials and awards.
- Collaborating FFA
and 4-H activities or events are obligated to have supervision representation
from both organizations.
The standards are in
agreement with Kansas 4-H and FFA and hereby affirmed by members and
professionals in order to participate in either educational program.

48 HOURS OF 4-H
According to The 4-H study of Positive Youth Development, 4-Hers are nearly 4 times more likely to make contribution sto their communities. But just how much can they do? In one weekend this fall, 48-Hours of 4-H will challenge club members, adult leaders and 4-Halumni to explore their service capabilities and inspire the community around them by taking part in some type of service project during the weekend of October 11-12, 2014. It might be a little project for a club or a big project the whole district or county gets involved in. It will be awesome to see what Kansas 4-H can accomplish during that time period. On 48 Hours of 4-H webpage you will find the following: Information about the event, a guide to plan a project that includes a timeline, graphics to use for promotion, and online registration for projects.
Please follow the project on Facebook. Hinshaw

4-H FCS JUDGING CONTEST UPDATE
A
workgroup has been meeting over the spring and summer months to discuss the state 4-H FCS judging contest. Representatives to this committee were Cindy Evans, Beth Hinshaw, Terri Kretzmeier, Susie Latta and Kathy Zongker. Andrea Feldkamp served as the facilitator for this
committee. After a series of conference calls, the following proposal was
shared for 4-H FCS judging:
A
Senior contest will be conducted during the 2015 Discovery Days time
frame. The proposed contest would focus on topics related to the five
essential FCS living skills and majors in the College of Human Ecology.
The FCS living skills include: Healthy relationships, Healthy living choices,
Financial well being, Strong leaders, and Strong communities. These skill areas serve as a
fantastic framework to guide topic selection for the contest. Contestants will be grouped into teams of
two, and will incorporate a game-type experience related to the topic
areas. A culminating challenge experience will be offered for the teams
to address, including an oral reasons option. Each unit will have the
option to enter two teams of two (4 participants) in this contest.
An Intermediate contest
will be conducted during the 2015 Kansas State Fair time frame. The proposed
contest would focus on topics related to Family and Consumer Science project
experiences. Contestants will be grouped in teams of two, and will view
video vignettes and participate in hands-on related activities. The
contest will utilize current State Fair 4-H FCS projects. In addition, an
oral reasons option could be incorporated to provide a public speaking
opportunity for the youth participants. Each unit will have the option to
enter two teams of two (4 participants) in this contest.
Volunteers interested in assisting with developing the contests can email Andrea Feldkamp at afeld@ksu.edu or call Andrea directly at 785-532-1554. Feldkamp
