Kansas 4-H’ers Travel Abroad on 4-H Exchanges

Submitted by Mary Kay Munson

Tanis Normile departed June 12 for an 8-week exchange experience in Japan. While being hosted by two Japanese families, she will have four weeks in the Tokyo area participating in the Nihongo program to learn about the Japanese language and the culture of Japan. After that, she will have a month-long home stay somewhere else in Japan. She will return August 9. Tanis is a 4-H member in Franklin County, Frontier District Extension. Her exchange is conducted by States’ 4-H International Exchange Programs and Kansas 4-H. In Japan, our partner for Tanis’ program is Labo Exchange Foundation. This fall and winter Tanis is committed to giving presentations about her experiences for 4-H and other groups in her area.
June 20, three Kansas 4-H’ers, Eliza Brockhoff, Leavenworth Co., Channing Dillinger Stevens Co., Wild West District, and Luke Walker, Saline Co., Central Kansas District, depart for Norway where they will be hosted by Norway 4H and member families throughout Norway. After a short orientation in Oslo, each of the 20 U. S. participants will travel to an individual host family. They will also participate in the Norway 4H National Camp at Voss, Norway, before returning home from their 4-week exchange July 20. Eliza, Channing, and Luke are also expected to share their exchange experiences in their home areas upon return.
Information on next year’s exchange offerings should be available in late September. When it is, it will be posted on the State 4-H website: www.kansas4-h.org. Contact state coordinator, Mary Kay Munson, mkm2@ksu.edu for more information.
