Welcome to Kansas for Academic Year Students

Submitted by Mary Kay Munson

August 8 promises to be a big day in the lives of two high school students from Eastern Europe and their 4-H host families.  The students are FLEX program participants programmed through States’ 4-H and Kansas 4-H for the school year from August through May.  The FLEX Program is funded by the U.S. Government to bring students here from Eastern Europe and Central Asia to experience democratic processes, especially civic engagement and volunteering, in addition to making close relationships with Americans. They will participate in 4-H activities in the host counties through the year.

From Ukraine Yelyzaveta (Liza) Borysenko will be hosted by the Ron and Kristie Moon family in rural Junction City and attend Chapman High School with daughter Lauren.  From Poland Daria Pieczynska will be hosted by the Jason and Roxanne Beck family in White City and attend high school there with daughter Jamie.  Thanks to Ginger Kopfer and Lori Bammerlin for taking the roles of local coordinators for Liza and Daria, respectively.  For information on the Academic Year Program, contact Mary Kay Munson at 785-238-3631 or munson@ksbroadband.net.
