Kansas 4-H Tip Sheet

December 16, 2019

Statewide Accidental Insurance for all 4-H Members and Volunteers

Submitted by Wade M. Weber

There has been a request for further clarification as to the specifics around the State 4-H Policy from American Income Life.

Who is covered and when?

1) All individually identified 4-H members and board approved volunteers within 4-H Online are now covered for all 4-H activities/programs (during the 4-H activity and they are also covered for travel to and from the 4-H activities) all year long (October 1, 2019 - Sept 30, 2020) whether local, district or state.

2) Additionally, all individually identified youth participants and adults will receive illness coverage for the travel to and from an 4-H event, the duration of their event within 4-H Camping programs over the summer (regardless of place) and also the following overnight statewide events: Citizenship in Action; Kansas Youth Leadership Forum, and Discovery Days.

Who/What is not covered with annual Kansas 4-H policy? (and therefore should consider Special Risk Insurance (see below))

1) Programs or events which are open to non-4-H youth. (This may include events where participants are counted via “Group Enrollment” at schools or community events.) Defined as: Events or programs intentionally designed to engage a broad spectrum of youth in the community beyond individually enrolled 4-H youth.

2) Any “high risk” programs including volunteers who have not been covered by an annual policy. This may include horse/livestock shows, shooting sports events, etc. where adults who are not officially registered as 4-H volunteers may be assisting with the operation of the event (see special risk insurance)

3) Any overnight, multiple day, or travel event other than a Summer Residential Camp or the specific overnight events outlined above, where you would want participants to be covered for Illness.

4) Downhill winter sports
